Lily’s first birthday

 Slowly and without noticing, we have a one year old child.

Last Saturday we celebrated Lily’s first birthday.

The morning has started with the family tradition; Ever since I can remember, I’ve always woken up in the morning of my birthday to the sight of  a “Birthday Table”. This bedside table has been placed in the middle of the night by my parents, who filled it with candy, flowers, greeting cards and gifts. At one point, when I was a teenage girl, I asked my mother to keep the tradition when I grow up and no longer live at home. So the whole tradition’s been transmitted to Aviv, my husband, and every year on my birthday, he arranges me a joyful and surprising “Birthday Table”.

Lily, however, is still crawling and not into tables in general. So in the morning of her birthday, she came into the living room to find balloons and a few gifts to open (of course she didn’t understand what the fuss was all about and was interested mostly in the gifts’ packaging, but tradition is tradition)!

Her birthday fell on a Saturday, so it was a great opportunity to invite the family to a brunch at our new home, that still hasn’t had a proper housewarming party.

For me, it was also a great opportunity to do one of my favorite things – to entertain, and with much style! I love to arrange flowers, hang decorations, bring out beautiful ceramics and cook delicious food.

Our mothers were in charge of some amazing treats, so our dinning table was stuffed with fun and tasty food.

Lily enjoyed spending time with her uncles, aunts and cousins but didn’t really understand that this party was made especially for her.

When we were full, we sat down and talked, played together and had fun… and then it was the perfect time to bring out the cake.

Lily loves flowers and small, delicate things in general (like mother like daughter, right?), so I decided to bake her a cake with flowers and insects.

To be honest, I didn’t plan to spend so much time on the cake, but I had so much fun, that I got carried away! This was my first attempt to use sugar dough and I enjoyed every minute of it, especially painting with food coloring.  Not too bad for a first try, right?
