Last week we celebrated Lily’s second birthday.
My, how time flies. I hadn’t even noticed that my sweet little baby girl had turned into a little person – she yammers on and on and curiously asks a whole lot of questions, she loves to laugh, sing and be silly, she paints, dances, loves going to the beach and petting cute puppies.
Last Saturday we had our entire family over for a sumptuous brunch (don’t be fooled by the picture, it was taken just before most of the food was served). there were yummy salads, bruschetta, pastries and unbelievably delicious Argentinian enchiladas my dad prepared, following my grandma’s original recipe.
Lilly got lots of lovely presents (two special ones, made with a lot of love and creativity, will be featured in my next post) but what she was happiest about was the cake I had made especially for her.
During the weeks building up to Lily’s birthday I found myself racking my brain trying to think of a cake concept that will make her happy and will also be fun for me to make. Luckily she still isn’t into branded characters & cartoons, so I could pick whatever theme I wanted. I ended up making a cake that was actually a little birthday party in itself.
I baked a chocolate cake and quickly covered it in sugar paste icing, decorating it with small flags made of triangles I cut with a knife and placing them alongside each other.
The guests at this particular mini-party were plastic animals (store bought), each with its own tiny paper party hat. Their small table included mini sugar paste cakes and chocolate pralines, that I actually had just lying around in my kitchen, decorated with tiny candy. The animals brought little gifts made of pralines and macaroons tied up in a sugar paste bow and balloons, which I also made of sugar paste. To give them a glossy finish, I brushed them with a little water, creating a syrupy glaze.
To finish it off, I hung a string of colorful fringes I happened to get that same week for my next SS 2017 collection…
